Face-to-Face Learning or E-Learning, Which Is Better for You? 🤔

Face-to-face learning or e-learning

E-learning, also known as distance, online or virtual education, is becoming increasingly important at all academic levels, from courses to higher education such as master’s degrees and doctorates. The pandemic situation has encouraged many educational centers and universities to offer this more flexible and non-contact mode of education that eliminates geographical barriers.

This type of education establishes its learning channels and guidelines, making it easier for students to reconcile their studies with their work and family life. But is it as effective as face-to-face education? Which modality is more suitable depending on the circumstances and goals to be achieved? Let’s look at the advantages and disadvantages of each:

Advantages and disadvantages of e-learning

The advantages of distance learning are obvious. On the one hand, geographical barriers are eliminated so that students can access classes from anywhere. Timetables are more flexible as content is available at all times and students can progress at the pace they need. On the other hand, costs are usually lower, such as tuition fees. It is also important to note that content can be updated continuously, easily, and in real-time.

Among the disadvantages of this type of education is that to be effective and to be able to meet their objectives, students need to be highly organized and strong-willed. In addition, communication with the teacher can be more complicated than in face-to-face education, and above all, socialization with the rest of the classmates is more difficult.

Advantages and disadvantages of face-to-face education

The advantages of face-to-face education are above all those derived from the proximity to the teacher and the rest of the students, something that the online modality cannot offer. As there is human contact and greater interaction, involvement, debate, and collaboration between the different actors are improved. Moreover, as the face-to-face mode is subject to timetables, it favors the establishment of study routines and habits that are very favorable for certain student profiles.

The disadvantages of this modality are the need to travel with its investment in time and money, the limitation of training due to geographical reasons, and the impossibility of returning to receive some of the classes or accessing certain content.

Which modality is better for me?

Normally when choosing between face-to-face learning and e-learning, we can distinguish different student profiles based on age and available free time. Younger people tend to opt for face-to-face education as they have more time and prefer to live an experience with more social interaction, while older people with jobs and family responsibilities, for obvious reasons, tend to choose online education.

But when choosing an educational modality we should not only take into account the time available but also our capabilities as a student. For example, if I am a person who finds it difficult to plan, set study schedules, and stick to them, it would probably be smarter to choose a face-to-face education that forces me to create a real routine.

More and more academic institutions and universities are opting to offer a blended model, part face-to-face and part online. This hybrid model or blended learning combines attendance at the educational center with online participation allowing students not to lose the proximity to teachers and classmates and at the same time have access to the content at any time from anywhere.

At numens, we adapt to the needs of students and companies by offering all academic modalities: face-to-face, online, or distance learning, and Mita or hybrid education.
